Introduction
Making a Career Decision
If you're not sure where to start, or you've got some job ideas and don't know how to find out more, we've got a few tips to get you on the move.
Use careers matching or information programs
You may be able to use Fast Tomato, Prefinio, Kudos, JED, Eclips or something similar at school or college to find out about:
-
different jobs and careers
-
what types of job may suit you
-
what qualifications – and sometimes experience and/or training - you need for different jobs
If your school or college doesn't have a licence for careers programs you can use the careers programs at your local Connexions Centre.
There are also some free websites with information that can help you to find out more including:
- I Could.com careers videos site
- Look it up in the National Careers Service Job Profiles.
You can also use books and leaflets about jobs – find them in your school or college or at your local Connexions Centre.
Talk to Connexions
If you have tried to get ideas together and you're still in a muddle it's a good idea to talk to your Personal Adviser (PA). S/he will be able to help you. You can talk to PAs at your school, college or your local Connexions Centre.
Help from your school or college
You will also be able to ask for help from your tutor and/or careers co-ordinator in your school or college.
Work Experience
Work experience, part-time jobs and volunteering are all excellent opportunities to try out one or more job ideas.
Schools and colleges may offer you work experience as part of your course. Some courses such as Diplomas also include more 'hands-on’ activities where you explore what's involved in a job.
Make sure you make the most of any opportunities that come your way and if you need more experience consider volunteering as a way of building up your skills and finding more about the world of work.
