Looking for a Job
Whether you're 16, 17 or 18, if you've decided to apply for a job or apprenticeship here's where you can look:
- Your local Connexions Centre or check out local Connexions vacancies online
- The national Apprenticeship Vacancy Matching Service – search and apply for Apprenticeships in England. If you would like help to use this site your Personal Adviser will be able to offer you support.
- Jobcentre Plus centres and their website
- Your local area prospectus - it has details of work-based learning opportunities in Walsall
- Newspapers – local papers with jobs in the Walsall area include:
- Employment agencies (under 18s must have a letter from Connexions to say that they have had advice from a Personal Adviser)
- The Internet – Plus don't forget the new online recruitment sites such as twitter - or access the most popular job sites from www.careersiteadvisor.com
- Ask your friends and family.
- You can also try approaching employers directly – use the application forms page to find out about filling out applications, writing a CV etc.
There's no set amount of time for finding a job. It may take weeks or even months, so be prepared and try not to let it get you down! Your Personal Adviser (PA) will be able to help you with your job search and your application if you need it.
What to do next
- See your Personal Adviser to discuss the options on offer
- Check the grades you're likely to need for the vacancies that you're interested in (Personal Advisers can help with this)
- Get started by preparing your CV and writing a covering letter to send out with it – check out the tips we've given on our CV page.
- Think about whether there are any local employers you'd like to work and train with, get their addresses from telephone directories or www.yell.com and send them your CV and covering letter.
- Bear in mind that if you're leaving year 11, you cannot start work or training until after the last Friday in June - but you can apply before this date.
